The current cold spell sweeping across Europe has focused many minds on booking holidays in warmer climes. And despite the current weak state of sterling against the euro the little island of Lanzarote in the Canaries remains a real hot favourite with tourists from the UK and Eire. As visitor numbers from both of these countries rose during November 2009 even whilst other holiday destinations were struggling with lower arrivals.

The Canary Islands are the group of seven Spanish owned islands located off the coast of Morocco. So they enjoy much better weather than mainland Europe and bask in sun shine even through the winter months.

They are also just a four hour flight time from key markets such as the UK, making them one of the few winter sun destinations that dont require a lengthy journey. Whilst boasting all the familiarity and customs of mainland Spain.

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the islands and has been welcoming tourists for well over forty years. With three main holiday resorts and a wealth of good quality accommodation located across the island.

Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments are popular with visitors who prefer self catering accommodation to hotels. And often offer much better value for money too – with studio accommodation on centrally located complexes in the heart of the largest resort of Puerto del Carmen starting from around £180 per week.

Whilst holiday villas in Playa Blanca also offer excellent value for money for those on a tight budget. With prices starting from £350 per week for a standard two bedroom property with private pool.

Both resorts are ideal for anyone seeking winter sun – as they enjoy a sheltered position on the island´s south east coast and enjoy better weather than the northern half of the island. Which is where the rival resort of Costa Teguise is located.

Travellers can now also get to Lanzarote much more cheaply than in the past. As there is much more competition on this route than there used to be. With leading budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet competing for custom with low cost fares from UK airports. Offering headline return flights for as little as £9.99.

All flights arrive at Arrecife airport which is named after the capital city of the island which is located just 3km away. But visitors should note that there is no shuttle bus service from the airport of the main resorts. Hence it is important to either book car hire in advance of be prepared to queue for a taxi outside the main arrivals hall.
